Automated Gate Installation for Minnesota Properties

A driveway gate adds privacy and a defined entrance to your property. In the Twin Cities, a gate also has to work in February. Loyalty Garage Door And Gates plans and installs gates with winter in mind from the first conversation. Call (612) 688-3103 to talk about your project.

Planning Around Snow, Frost and Plows

Many gate problems we are called to fix trace back to choices made during installation. We think about these questions up front:

  • Where will the snow go? A swing gate needs a clear arc. If your plow service pushes snow toward the gate, a slide gate or a different swing direction may be a better fit.
  • How will the ground move? Frost penetrates deep into Minnesota soil. Posts and operator pads need footings that account for it, or the gate can drift out of alignment after the first winter.
  • Does the driveway slope? A swing gate on an uphill drive may need special hinges or a different design to clear the pavement.
  • What powers it? Hard-wired power is reliable. Solar can work but needs adequate panel and battery capacity for short, cloudy winter days.
  • Where do the sensors sit? Placing safety sensors and loop detectors where snow is less likely to bury them saves headaches later.

Swing Gates vs. Slide Gates

Swing gates

Single or double swing gates suit many residential driveways and tend to have a classic look. They need room to open, plus a clear arc that is kept free of snow. Operators can be arm-style or ram-style, mounted to the posts.

Slide gates

Slide gates travel sideways along a fence line. They are useful where space in front of or behind the gate is limited, or where snow would be piled in a swing path. Cantilever designs, which ride on rollers off the ground, can avoid some of the problems that come with a track that fills with snow and ice.

Gate Materials

  • Steel: strong and secure; look for coatings that resist rust from salt and moisture.
  • Aluminum: lighter weight, naturally corrosion-resistant, and easier on the operator.
  • Wood: natural appearance and full privacy, though it needs finishing and can be heavy.
  • Mixed designs: steel or aluminum frames with wood or composite infill.

Access Control Options

Choose how you, your family and visitors get through:

  • Handheld remotes and vehicle-mounted transmitters
  • Keypads with user codes
  • Intercoms or video intercoms
  • Smartphone apps
  • Automatic exit sensors so departing vehicles do not need a remote

Consider battery backup so the gate can still operate during a winter power outage, and ask how the manual release works on the operator you choose.

The Installation Process

  1. Site visit. We look at the driveway, grade, soil, snow storage, power availability and how you use the entrance.
  2. Design and quote. We recommend a gate style, operator and access controls, and explain the reasoning.
  3. Utility check. Underground utilities are marked before any digging begins.
  4. Posts and footings. Posts and operator pads are set to suit local conditions.
  5. Gate and operator. We hang or mount the gate, install the operator, wire power and controls, and install safety devices.
  6. Testing and training. We test every function and safety device, then show you how to use the controls and manual release.
